Improving Battery Tab Performance at the Avocet Research Centre

Jul 28, 2026

Every component within a lithium-ion pouch cell contributes to overall performance, including those that often receive little attention during the early stages of development. One example is the polymer film used on battery tabs.

At the Avocet Research Centre, we work with manufacturers to understand how materials interact within a complete battery system. Polymer films may appear to be a small part of the tab assembly, but selecting the right material and validating its performance can have a significant impact on sealing reliability, electrical insulation, and long-term durability.

More Than Just a Protective Layer

The polymer film applied to a battery tab performs two important functions. It creates the seal between the metal tab and the pouch film while also electrically insulating the tab from the aluminium pouch.

To achieve this, the material must provide consistent adhesion, withstand exposure to battery electrolyte, and maintain its properties throughout the life of the cell. Choosing the wrong film can lead to sealing inconsistencies, reduced durability, or manufacturing challenges during welding and pouch assembly.

Why Validation Matters

Film thickness, polymer composition, and compatibility with the selected tab material all influence performance. Even small changes can affect sealing behaviour, mechanical strength, and production consistency. Rather than relying solely on material specifications, the Avocet Research Centre works with customers to validate materials under application-specific conditions. This allows potential issues to be identified before production, reducing development risk and avoiding costly redesigns later.

Supporting Better Battery Components

ARC supports manufacturers through material evaluation, performance testing, and prototype development to ensure each component works as part of the complete battery system. Whether developing new battery tabs, evaluating alternative polymer films, or improving sealing performance, our focus is on providing practical data that supports confident engineering decisions.

Looking Ahead

As battery technology continues to evolve, every material choice becomes more important. By validating polymer films alongside the other components within a cell, manufacturers can improve reliability while supporting more efficient production.

At the Avocet Research Centre, we help turn material selection into informed engineering decisions, giving our partners greater confidence as they move from development to manufacture.
