Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) has traditionally been used to deliver corrosion protection and surface durability across many industries. Today, increasing regulatory pressure and environmental concerns are driving manufacturers to look for safer alternatives that still meet demanding performance requirements.
At the Avocet Research Centre (ARC), we support this transition through advanced surface engineering, including laser processing, as a cleaner and more controllable approach to surface treatment.
Moving Away from Cr (VI) Without Compromising Performance
For many manufacturers, removing Cr (VI) from production is not straightforward. Any replacement must still deliver corrosion resistance, strong adhesion, and long-term durability, particularly in aggressive environments such as lithium-ion battery systems.
ARC recently worked with a battery component manufacturer facing exactly this challenge. The goal was to remove Cr (VI) while maintaining performance, regulatory compliance, and suitability for reel-to-reel manufacturing.
How Laser Processing Supports Surface Engineering
Alongside coating chemistry development, laser processing played a key role in enabling a chromium-free solution. Laser-based surface activation and modification allowed precise control of surface properties, supporting improved adhesion and corrosion resistance without the need for wet chemical treatments.
This approach reduced environmental impact, removed hazardous waste streams, and simplified processing, while remaining compatible with industrial production requirements.
A Practical Route to Cleaner Manufacturing
The resulting surface treatment exceeded the performance of the original Cr (VI)-based process, delivering:
- Improved corrosion resistance in battery electrolyte environments
- Strong adhesion and durability under demanding conditions
- Reduced process footprint and operating costs
- Full compliance with environmental regulations
The technology has since progressed toward industrial implementation, with intellectual property filed by the manufacturer.
Thank You for Visiting Us at MRE 2026
We would like to thank everyone who visited the Avocet Research Centre at Materials Research Exchange 2026. It was a pleasure to discuss sustainable surface engineering, laser processing, and the transition away from traditional chemical treatments with so many engaged researchers, engineers, and industry partners.
The conversations around cleaner manufacturing routes, regulatory compliance, and scalable surface technologies reflect the direction our industry is moving, and we’re proud to be part of that progress.
If you didn’t get the chance to speak with us during the show but would like to continue the discussion, our team would be pleased to connect.
